Built as the city residence of prominent planter Dr. John D. Bellamy, the Bellamy Mansion (ca. 1861) is one of Wilmington's most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture. Visitors to the Mansion will see all four floors and the belvedere of the restored 22-room house, as well as the formal gardens. The tours emphasize the architecture, construction, and restoration of the house, as well as the fascinating history of its former occupants. Two gallery spaces feature changing exhibits on architectural history, historic preservation, and the design arts. Plans for the future include restoration of the original slave quarters. These excavated ruins of a colonial port town that was founded in 1726 and burned by the British in 1776. The state historic site includes a Visitors Center. Guide maps of the town are provided. The ruins include St. Philip's Church, the former home of royal governors, and several other sites used for housing residential/business merchants. Starting the tour in the dungeon area, this seated and walking tour will provide a look into the 1700s and the life of the family. The Colonial surgeon in full costume will provide a demonstration on how medicine was practiced. A Colonial cook will prepare food in the hearth. The Colonial Gardens are many times filled with aromatic gardenias, azaleas, fig and pear trees... magnolia, pomegranate and camellias... the design was established in the 1700s. A fun and responsive 25' till keelboat, Datso, is also available for sails on the Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway, past historic sites and wildlife sanctuaries. Sunrise sails on Datso provide an ideal time for viewing birds and marine life.
Typically up to six passengers take a sunrise, morning, afternoon or sunset cruise at a per-person price. There is a two-person minimum for a cruise on the Datso, and a four-person minimum for Caroline Gale. Private charters are also popular for persons who want an exclusive romantic experience. Last major stronghold of the Confederacy, Fort Fisher was the site of two major battles, and finally fell January 15, 1865. This earthen fort kept the Cape Fear River and the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners, which delivered vital supplies to Confederate armies. The Museum proudly presents one of the world's major collections of the romantic color prints by the renowned 19th Century American artist Mary Cassatt, who worked with the French Impressionists. Masonboro Island
This is an eight-mile-long, completely undeveloped barrier island. It lies between Wrightsville Beach to the north and Carolina Beach to the south. There are approximately 5,000 acres of pristine marshes that lie between the island and the Intracoastal Waterway. It has been protected from development by the efforts of the Society for Masonboro Island, Inc. and the state.

A most interesting, exciting spot in the Wilmington area is the New Hanover County Arboretum. Six and one half acres of land contain several thousand species of plants. Through extensive labeling, visitors are able to identify plant life adaptable to Southeastern North Carolina including the coastal area. An authentic Japanese garden also exhibits a traditional teahouse. The perennial border offers continuous blooms along with specialty areas such as aquatic plants, herbs, vegetable and rose gardens. Offices are open five days a week from 8am-5pm and free guided tours for groups greater than 15 are often available by appointment. Poplar Grove Historic Plantation

The estate known as Poplar Grove was purchased from Francis Clayton in 1795 by James Foy, Jr. The 628-acre plantation produced peanuts as well as peas, corn, and beans; held some 64 slaves; and served as an aid and resource to neighboring small farmers. The original manor house at Futch's Creek was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1850 on its present site by Joseph Mumford Foy. Renovated and opened to the public in 1980 under the auspices of the Poplar Grove Foundation, the house and grounds with 16 acres now serve as a museum and cultural arts center. 1850 Greek Revival plantation house, weaving and basket demonstrations, or blacksmith, gift shop, exhibits, picnic and playground, wedding and party facilities, classes and workshops, special events, animals and restaurant on site. Waterfront Park - Southport
On Bay Street at land's end. Southport's waterfront long has been a center of activity, from roving pirates and river pilots to fishermen bringing in the day's catch. From the waterfront, you'll be able to see two of the area's important landmarks, Old Baldy Lighthouse (1817), the state's oldest, on Bald Head Island; and the Oak Island Lighthouse at Caswell Beach. This powerful lighthouse, with a range of 24 miles, is the nation's most brilliant light.

Experience the grandeur and charm of Old Wilmington with a trolley tour. Enjoy an eight mile, 45-minute tour of beautiful mansions, haunted homes, museums, TV & movie locations, birthplaces of famous natives, African-American History and Civil War shipyards. Tours run April-October. Tour times on the hour 10am-5pm.

Guided tour recalls opulent life in Wilmington before the Civil War. This Italianate-style residence was built by a prominent merchant while Wilmington prospered as port and railway hub. The house was occupied by the Latimer Family until 1963, then restored by the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. The house contains an archive with an unusual collection of historical records and books and surrounded by a beautifully restored Victorian garden. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
