As a Colonial trading port, Alexandria was a place where people came to buy, sell and trade their goods. Corn, wheat and tobacco were the hot commodities at first, but soon tradesman, artisans and merchants brought their own crafts, furniture and goods to Market Square to sell and trade with other visitors and residents. Today, you probably won't be able to barter many trades, but buying and selling is still one of Alexandria's pastimes. And instead of corn and tobacco, today's merchants sell everything from fine art to antiques, designer clothes to home décor, and everything in between.
Along Alexandria's main thoroughfare, King Street, and throughout the surrounding blocks, you'll find an exciting mix of eclectic shops, high-end boutiques, big-name stores, quaint markets, furniture stores, art studios, pet boutiques and more. Alexandria shopping truly caters to every taste, budget and style.
If antiques are your passion, you'll find a huge selection of one-of-a-kind pieces, from 18th-century armoires to Provence pottery, vintage clothing to period decorative accessories. Many people come from miles away to visit Old Town and its high concentration of antique shops. Fine art and home décor are also common finds along King Street's bustling sidewalks.
Across Northern Virginia, you'll find plenty of popular malls, outlet stores, and shopping areas. Big-name retailers and popular designer stores are scattered around the area and in D.C. But nowhere but Old Town will you find suck a unique collection of stores selling such an eclectic mix of goods.
An added plus—nearly every business in Alexandria is dog friendly, so you don't have to leave your best friend at home when you're running around town.
